"I'm Hearing More About Novasure for Bleeding. Can You Explain It?"
About one in five women suffer from heavy menstrual bleeding, or menorraghia. It can occur at any time during the menstrual cycle, and can be caused by a wide variety of conditions, such as fibroids, polyps, or hormone imbalance. This is obviously an uncomfortable and inconvenient lifestyle, and in the past there have been options available that may not have succeeded in resolving the bleeding.
These options include hormone therapy, dilation and curettage (D&C), endometrial ablation, and even hysterectomy.
The FDA has approved the use of Novasure which can quickly and permanently resolve the issue.
Conventional endometrial ablation removes the uterus’ lining with an electrosurgical tool or laser. Risks include perforation of the uterus, bleeding, or infection. Novasure has become popular due to its use of a precisely controlled dose of energy.
The procedure is simple and safe, and is performed in the office. The physician inserts a wand into the uterus which expands a mesh device to conform to the dimensions of the uterus. Electrical energy is delivered through the mesh for approximately 90 seconds, removing the endometrial lining. The mesh device is then retracted back into the wand and both are removed from the uterus. There is only mild cramping and the recovery period is brief.
